Wedding dress fabric

One of the most important decisions you will make is fabric choice. Generally, it is best to steer away from synthetics as these types of fabrics do not breathe. Much better to choose silk, linen or cotton as these are all natural fibres that “breathe”. You need to ensure however, that they have been specially treated to prevent creasing.

Beading, embroidery, lace and other embellishments such as rhinestones can enhance a wedding gown but be aware that a gown that is made of quality fabric with features such as those described above will affect price.

The good news — is that you can generally purchase a wedding dress designed by a leading designer label for a fraction of the new price from Your Wedding Wardrobe.

There is a wide range of fabric choices available and this can be overwhelming. Let Your Wedding Wardrobe help you become familiar with some of the different names and textures. Fabrics vary in weight and appearance some of the more popular choices for wedding gowns are silk, duchess satin and crepe de Chine.

The fabric you choose very much depends on the style of the gown.

Listed below are some of the more popular choices.

Brocade is a rich heavy fabric with a raised design, generally with gold or silver threads on a satin weave background. An excellent choice for a period style wedding dress where the bodice and skirt is made of damask or brocade.

Charmeuse is a lightweight soft fabric, which drapes beautifully. It has a semi-lustrous satin finish on one side and a dull finish on the other side. If you want a wedding gown that has fluidity in movement this is the fabric to choose.

Chiffon is a fine extremely sheer plain woven silk. Light weight with a dull finish. It is very feminine and elegant. It drapes softly and if often used in veils, wraps and scarves.

Crepe is lightweight and drapes exquisitely. It’s versatility means that is it extremely suitable for after five cocktail dresses, bridesmaid dresses and evening gowns.

Crepe Back Satin is a soft very lustrous silk fabric. It is reversible which means that both sides of the fabric can be used in a design creating stunningly beautiful effects.

Crepe de Chine is a light, shimmering silk material from China. It is the ideal choice for a romantic style wedding gown as it hangs and flows well.

Damask looks similar to brocade with similar raised design and is of a lighter weight.

Duchess satin is a gorgeous heavy fabric with a high luster. It is a very popular choice for traditional wedding dresses. It can look spectacular if made-up in a classic simply styled gown such as a sheath.

Shantung is a heavy raw silk with an uneven surface and luminous quality. It has irregular knots throughout the fabric and can look stunning made-up in a simple design. It does have a tendency to crease.

Taffeta is a plain-weave light fabric with a shiny surface. It makes a rustling sound with any movement and is used mostly in flared or very full skirts.

Thai Silk is a smooth, light, even fabric that is lovely to touch and wear. It looks best made-up in simple stylish gowns and hangs well.
